Chakwera to groom transformative leaders

President Lazarus Chakwera has expressed his desire to groom a cohort of transformative leaders that can drive Malawi’s development agenda.

In his address to delegates to the Global Leadership Summit in Lilongwe on Wednesday, he said Malawi will need strong and capable leaders to drive the country’s ambitions of promoting food security, job creation and wealth creation.

The President said it is in this regard that he will strive to recruit people capable of delivering timely and consistent results to achieve his goals.

Said Chakwera: “Whenever I appoint or fire people from public office, people assume I want to pick someone with a similar religious or political view to mine, or someone who is popular with the public.

“Or [someone who is] related to someone who is politically connected. But I want what every community leader needs, people who can deliver consistent results.”

He said he has been criticised in the past for making some appointments.

When the President hired his maiden Cabinet in July 2020 after triumphing in the June 23 2020 court-sanctioned fresh presidential election, some sections of the public felt he filled the Cabinet with people who aided his ascent to power. The Nation newspaper described his first Cabinet as a “family affair” after it emerged that there were a couple, blood relations and others.

In his address during the meeting also attended by Vice-President Saulos Chilima and other senior public officers, Global Leadership Network country team leader Victor Mughogho said Malawi needs leaders who can tackle challenges head on to drive economic transformation in their respective community.

“Every community needs inspired and well-trained leaders who can inspire their people to transform their communities. I hope this summit will inspire public confidence that we have leaders who are converging to address their needs,” he said.

The Global Leadership Summit brought together technocrats from different sectors of the economy, including banking, the faith community, and ministers.
